Burma is a nation known for its drugs, flagrant immorality, and government-sponsored violence. A Buddhist regime took-over in 1988 and ever since Christianity has faced serious opposition. Despite all of the darkness looming over this country, God has raised up people to proclaim His gospel. The spread of Christianity in Burma dates back to Adoniram Judson in the 1800s. The people he witnessed to, the Karen, still hold strong to their faith today.
Today, many of the Karen people live in the jungles of eastern Burma, hiding from the Burmese army that seeks to kill them. The persecution of the Karen is so intense that they have begun to surround their villages with landmines to keep the enemy out. Their lives have not been easy, but their hope is in the things to come. This summer, Remember is sending in a team to aid these precious people.
The excitement is growing as we at Remember finalize plans for our trip to Burma. Burma has held a special place in our hearts from the very beginning in 2005. Remember has lead several trips into this region and continually lifts the nation up in prayer as the persecution continues. About a year ago, we were informed of an orphanage in Burma which was in desperate need of help. We sent a survey team into the area earlier this year, to assess the needs and security of the area.
Our team came back excited about the opportunities in Burma, particularly at the orphanage we call the “Christian Children’s Home.” Several of the children’s fathers were martyred for their faith and others are parentless and destitute. Despite the horrible circumstances these children find themselves in, they remain cheerful. It is amazing to see how the joy of the Lord can be found no matter what the situation.
Due to the poverty in Burma, medical help is generally unavailable and the people often die from preventable diseases. Our team includes doctors, nurses, and dentists who will lovingly care for these children. The orphanage houses upwards of sixty children; however, we will be opening up our clinic to the surrounding villages and are planning on treating upwards of five hundred patients in just four short days.
Remember is looking to not only go in and provide for these medical needs but also for many others as well. Other members of the team will be doing construction and repair on the existing kitchen and buildings, installing a water purification system, and building some fences for the future procurement of livestock.
We are blessed by your support as we plan for this trip. Boxes full of shoes, craft supplies, and vitamins have come in. God is going to do great things in Burma. Please keep our team in your prayers these next weeks as they finalize trip details and undertake this ministry in Burma.
