Dear Friend of the Persecuted Church—
As we launch into the Christmas season, I am reminded of how much our culture is different than those in which so many of our brothers and sisters live. Our Christmas season may be highly commercialized, but in between “Rudolph” and “Frosty,” even the shopping malls play snippets of timeless truth. Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth, goodwill towards men!
That stands in stark contrast to what I saw in the mall we visited in Amman, Jordan. There the commercialism is interrupted five times a day by the Islamic call to prayer – a tool of oppression rather than a celebration of God’s goodness.
Whenever I think of that call to prayer, I think of the church we visited in Cairo that had to install sound-proof windows. You see, when the mosque down the street discovered that there was a church in their neighborhood, they turned one of the speakers directly at the church, and five times a day the whole building shook as they were reminded of the oppression of their culture.
In this season, let us not forget our brothers and sisters who celebrate the same world-changing event that we do, but celebrate it in such vastly different circumstances than we do. Don’t forget the Indian Christians that have been forced to spend this Christmas hiding in the jungles, unable to return to their homes for fear of their lives. Don’t forget Christians in Mosul who are just returning to their homes, and other Christians across the Middle East celebrating Christmas as refugees.
There are so many Christians, in so many circumstances, but with one common celebration. Together we rejoice in the birth of a special child and the eternal hope that His life gives us. It’s that same hope that makes us a Body in Him – joint heirs with him, and with each other, of the bountiful grace of God.
As we remember Him, let’s remember them, too. And as we celebrate, let’s continue to raise them up in intercession before the Hope of Nations, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Yours for the Body of Christ,
