The Weekly Reminder for November 19, 2008
-------------------------------------

Dear Friend of the Persecuted Church—

Last week, I got an e-mail from a man who had a friend die in a forest fire, leaving behind a young widow.  He discovered our ministry online, and wanted to know what thoughts I had on ministering to the young widow through this tragedy.

I was reminded by this question why it is what we do at Remember – and why it is a calling for the Body of Christ on the whole.  Even though this young woman was not widowed because of persecution, she joined a group that is close to the heart of God.

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.  Psalm 68:5

That word “judge” is translated a number of ways in different versions – “protector,” “defender,” even “champion.”  Those words give us just a piece of the compassion God has for widows.  The God that sees every time a sparrow falls cares for widows with a love that I’m positive we can barely imagine.

God’s care and compassion for widows clearly extends to a calling on the Body of Christ.  Both New Testament and Old are full of commands, encouragements, and entreaties that we care for widows.  Why?  Because we, you and I, are the instruments God uses to demonstrate His incredible compassion.

It has been my amazing personal privilege to see some of the lives that your prayers and donations have touched.  The widows that Remember serves often have nothing, nowhere to turn but us for the most basic needs.  I’ve seen the tears in their eyes as they tell their tragic stories, and I’ve seen those tears turn to tears of joy when we are able to minister to them.  Something as “simple” as knowing that someone is praying for them makes all the difference in the world.

I wish you could see these widows.  I wish that you could see what your love for them means – it is so real, and so powerful.  But you can know for certain that your prayers are powerful and effective.  They are a demonstration of the love that God the Father has for His precious children.

Yours for the Body of Christ,
